Butter Baker, the sister of Butter Avenue

Butter Baker is located in the Dundas Square area of Toronto at Yonge and Dundas and is the sister brand to Butter Avenue. While from the same masterminds both brands are distinctly unique with Butter Avenue being focused on French macarons, pastries, and more of an after hours indulgence whereas Butter Baker is suited to serving up goods to keep you fueled during the day.

Everything at Butter Baker is made with fresh, high quality, organic ingredients. Where possible they source these ingredients locally and everything is made fresh daily at their commissary located in Markham and delivered to their outpost at Yonge and Dundas each morning before opening at 7am.

The shop itself, while small (like almost all Toronto spots with retail coming at a premium cost), is well designed, functional, and aesthetically beautiful with a humble and elegant atmosphere. Upon entering there is a wall lined with in-house grown herbs which are used in the pastries and cakes.

The pastries here are definitely the draw. With plenty of flaky croissant and danish based choices what’s unique is that there are plenty of both savoury and sweet options available. Standouts include the pork belly croissant, seasonal fruit danishes, and banh mi croissants. Wash it all down with one of their espresso based beverages which have been sweetened with the South American Tonka bean infused syrup giving natural notes of vanilla, caramel, and hazelnut.

For the ultimate indulgence or to celebrate those extra special occasions look no further than their layered cakes which come in mouth watering flavours like lemon blueberry, banana caramel, matcha tiramisu, chocolate, and s’mores. These cakes are a rare exception where they taste just as good as they look, no easy feat in the world of food.

Without a doubt Toronto just got a little bit sweeter. Now I’m just looking for any excuse to order more cake.
